We could not wait to go to the number one tourist site in Moscow. For many years it has been used for public ceremonies and parades. Stepping out of our taxi, this is the view that we saw.

The large building in the center is the State Historical Museum and has been restored to is Russian Revival decor. It was founded in 1872 and has a collection of over 4.5 million objects but only 22,000 are on display. Exhibits begin in early Palaeolithic times and charts Russian history through the ages. You can view ancient manuscripts, imperial carriages, aristocratic fashion and the country's largest exhibition of coins.
To the right is one of the many towers that are part of the wall that surrounds the Kremlin.
Just to the left is Resurrection Gate which was originally built during the 17th century. This is a copy of the original which was demolished by Stalin to allow parading troops easier access to the square. As soon as you go through the gates, you will have an amazing view of St. Basil's Cathedral.
The Archaeological Museum is set 8 m (26 feet) underground. It was built around the 16th century foundations of the Voskresenky Bridge, which were unearthed along with other artifacts during construction work in 1994. Displays include ceramic tiles and silver coins which were found during the excavation.
