The museum was constructed in 1931 near the location of the former royal palace of Denpasar. It is built like a palace-temple with courtyards, pavilions and decorated temple gateways. This local museum has a collection of ancient objects related to the history of the island and preserves the local cultures from modern influences. It is located on the central square called Taman Puputan.
We soon discovered that this location was popular among
photographers and their models. Their costumes and
make-up were stunning.
There are four main buildings.
The Tabanah Pavilion shows off theatrical masks
and musical instruments.
A courtyard, pond and fish.
A couple having their formal pictures taken.
The Karangasem Pavilion has sculptures and paintings.
Water is available to thirsty visitors.
The Timur Pavilion holds archaeological finds, tools and stone sarcophagus. This is a coffin made of stone.
It is oval with the top cover. Usually they were found with the dead body and the burial gifts, such as a cooking pot, an ax, jewelry and bronze or iron items.
The kulkul is a watchtower with a drum which is struck
when deities are thought to descend to the temple.
The Baleleng Pavilion has textiles and looms.
